I love working with Forest Pack. Tried to build a huge scene inspired by Tuscany. Lot's of trial and error to make everything work the way I wanted. Just getting the ground plane shaped correctly took some time (using Zbrush), painting the huge ground map at 15k, and building all the splines to control trees and hedges. Everything except the sky and most distant hills is 3D.
The most important thing to keep in mind when doing anything that aims to mimic reality is to do good research and really pay close attention to what makes nature look real. I relied heavily on my reference library when creating this piece. Everything from how a farming landscape is laid out, to tree variation, ground colouration, small patches and roads. Just all the elements that make it looks like a real, inhabited world.
Technically it's the same old approach. Highres where needed and low res everywhere else. High control through many separate FP-objects who share the same surface but operate on individual area splines.
Lit with a single HDRI and postwork in PS. Even though it's 98% 3D, I've easily spent 10 hours in Photoshop making it "sit" as well as I can.
